The Bronx, the northern borough of New York City, is a cultural melting pot and the third most densely populated county in the United States. The Bronx has an amazing and rich history (it’s the birthplace of hip hop and, by extension, the dominant youth culture of the entire world.

The name “Bronx” originated with Swedish born Jonas Bronck, who established the first settlement in the area as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639. According to a 2013 Census Bureau estimate, 54.6% of the population was of Hispanic or Latino origin, 45.8%  was white, 43.3% was African American, 4.2% Asian, 3.0% American Indian, 0.4% Pacific Islander, and 3.3% of two or more ethnicities making the Bronx an extremely diverse cultural borough. So as you can see, there is an extensive Latino community and here are 5 reasons Latinos are choosing apartments for rent in the Bronx NY…

Cultural Activities

The Bronx is home to many venues worth spending time at like Yankee Stadium, New York Botanical Garden, Bronx Zoo, Edgar Allen Poe Cottage, the pubic gardens at Wave Hill, and the Bronx Museum of the Arts. There are almost 200 Italian restaurants and pizzerias in the Bronx! Latino or not who doesn’t like pizza?! highly recommends Full Moon Pizzeria and Restaurant and ranked it #1. Full Moon Pizzeria is located at 602 E 187th Street at Arthur Avenue in the Belmont neighborhood, very reasonably priced and open until 10pm every night, except Sunday they close at 9pm. If your evening plans include dancing, the Beso Lounge and Restaurant in the Norwood neighborhood is the place to check out. The Beso Lounge is like no other place in the Bronx. The drinks are NOT watered down, the music is great (a little bit of everything), there’s plenty of room to dance, a drama free, mature crowd, hookahs and the staff are absolutely amazing. The Sampler Platter is a must try! It’s a guaranteed delicious combination of Guava Ribs, Coconut Shrimp, Chicken Chunks and Fried plantains. There’s a new vision for public schools – Bronx Latin School.

Rooted in its commitment to the community, and grounded in the love of learning, the Bronx Latin School is for students in grades 6 through 12. Bronx Latin is ranked in the top 50 high schools in New York City and offers a challenging program of arts and sciences, and encourages serious scholarship, independent thought and clarity of expression. The school’s partnership with Lehman College provides accelerated students an opportunity to participate in “College Now” courses beginning in their junior year. AP classes are offered in Spanish, Statistics and US history. There is a dress code, and extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, guitar club, BRASS League, and many school sports teams: flag football, soccer and basketball.

Latino Community Churches near your Bronx apartment

There’s approximately 20 Catholic churches in the Bronx, however not all Latinos are Catholic. There’s an uplifting church to worship with the community… with animated gestures and to the beat of tambourines, the parishioners of Iglesia Pentecostal Vida Nueva en Cristo (New Life in Christ Pentecostal Church located at 423 East 141st Street and Willis Avenue, Bronx, NY) reply to the praise shouted by Puerto Rican pastor Luz González. The pastor, who was raised a Catholic, converted to Pentecostalism 29 years ago. Pentecostalism offers an alternative religious faith that is often connected to the spiritual and material needs and wishes of Hispanics. When pastors are Latino, they speak the parishioners’ language, and the focus on divine salvation and the solution of everyday problems responds to the social and economic reality of the believers.
